Each summer, tourists flock to the valley in search of memorable wines and experiences. Some prefer the familiar while others seek undiscovered gems off the beaten path. Adventurous souls are richly rewarded when that path leads to Kalala Organic Estate Winery.
Five-minutes off Hwy 97 near downtown West Kelowna leads visitors into the Upper Bench’s serene orchards and vineyards, home of Kalala’s farm-gate style winery.
Inside, find great wine selections with ample choices in style, varietal and price (table wines range from $11 to $30/bottle) featuring monthly in-store specials. Taste internationally awarded wines (recently their Chardonnay and Merlot Icewines won at France’s Chardonnay du Monde and London’s International Wine & Spirits Competition, respectively). Great reasons to visit, but Kalala’s most unique attraction are the amazing personalities behind the tasting room bar.
Vineyard/cellar assistant and aspiring sommelier Julie Crawford offers free comedic rants in conjunction with complimentary tastings. Winemaker/pastry chef Tibor “Tibby” Erdelyi is a wealth of food-pairing suggestions and wine lore, while proprietor/viticulturist Karnail Singh Sidhu’s encyclopedic knowledge of organic farming techniques bubblea under his kind and humble nature. Experts in their own right, each share in hosting the tasting-room, open daily 10-6.
“We have all the right people to answer almost any question,” says Julie. “Answers come with a healthy dose of sarcasm and wit. We’ve got loads of personality here. There’s almost too much passion for one winery!”
Come help celebrate their 6th anniversary open house July 5.
