Every winery has a unique experience, and many offer something designed around their philosophy. At Ancient Hill Estate Winery they encourage you to make your own experience once you taste the wines. Many people savour a glass with a picnic lunch brought along while taking in the panoramic views of Kelowna and Lake Country; for many locals it has become a favourite afternoon pastime.
Ancient Hill opened in May 2011 producing wines that showcase the cooler terroir of their location. Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir and Baco Noir are their focus. All of their wines have a fresh fruity character with intense flavours and good balance. Owner Richard Kamphuys says he is pleased that customers often comment they like all of the wines. All of them are great value.
2010 Pinot Gris $17.99
Fresh and summery on the nose with peach, papaya and magnolia notes; crisp and refreshing on the palate with a gingery finish. Pairs well with chicken or salads.
2010 Gewürztraminer – $18.99
Intense lychee nose, melon and rosewater flavours on the palate finishing clean. Excellent pairing for Asian flavours.
2010 Lazerus $16.99
This unoaked red blend (Zweigelt, Lemberger, Pinot Noir and a touch of Baco Noir) is gaining popularity as people discover its unique character. Rich ruby colour, juicy black cherry flavours with a chocolate undertone. Pairs with grilled meats or pasta with tomato meat sauces.
2010 Baco Noir $24.99
Ancient Hill’s flagship wine is a deep dark brick colour with aromas of prune; flavours of spiced dark fruits, mocha and butterscotch and a velvety texture fill your mouth. Only partial oaking offers more chance for the fruit flavours to come through. Pairs with red meat and strong cheeses.
