When the harvest comes in, farmers like to celebrate. For those farmers who have been at it a long time, they know how to do it right. To celebrate their 128th year of family farming, Rustic Roots *Winery* will be hosting the 6th Annual Harvest Festival on October 5th, from 2-6pm. “There will be live music, artisan market, an Heirloom tomato tasting competition, face-painting, scavenger hunts, and a chef prepared locally-farmed food,” explains Sara Harker. It promises to be a fabulous event *for the whole family* showcasing locally-sourced, organic and sustainably produced foods.
For the Harker family, the local community can also be the whole province. Harker’s Organics will again be participating in the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation’s “BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Program” which delivers fresh BC-grown produce to over 400,000 children in schools throughout the province. “We provide the organic peaches, plums, apples, and pears utilized in the program” explains Sara Harker, “we’ve been a part of it since its inception in 2007.”
Harvest won’t be the only thing on the family’s minds this fall. As the 2013 winners of the BC Outstanding Young Farmers award, Sara and Troy Harker will be heading to the National Outstanding Young Farmers Competition in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Drop in and share the Harker Family’s passion for creating a secure sustainable food system and enjoy Rustic Roots Winery’s award winning wines including the 2012 Vintages of Plum and Santa Rosa.
