Originally their 20-acre parcel in Oliver was farmed as an orchard, where they grew cherries, peaches and apples. But, with a Portuguese heritage steeped in the love of wine, they couldn’t resist converting to vineyard in 1999. Their first plantings at Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery were Merlot and Chardonnay but now the vineyard has expanded to include many varietals including Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Malbec and most recently Zinfandel and Petit Verdot. The tasting room opened its doors in 2007 and since then has provided one of the most memorable experiences in the Valley – largely due to the storytelling ability of John who is often found behind the bar. It’s a true family affair with son Michael taking on the duties of Winemaker to much acclaim – the 2012 Wine Access Awards chose their 2009 Syrah as the Best Red Wine in Canada.
During the Spring Wine Festival, spend an afternoon at Quinta Ferreira on May 5th from 12-3pm for Bifanas (traditional Portuguese pork on a bun) & Wine. It’s a great time to sample the new releases of the 2010 Syrah (500 cases) as the 2009 is sold out. Also sample the new release of 2011 Viognier (300 cases) and the 2011 Unoaked Chardonnay. Tickets are $15. Another upcoming popular event to mark on your calendar is the popular 2nd Annual Paella Event on July 14th, with a live band, delicious food and wine – it sells out quickly so reserve your tickets now.
