It is always an uplifting experience to meet people who share your passion for wine and Ancient Hill’s owners Richard and Jitske Kamphuys do just that. The family owned winery is located in Ellison, a rural part of North Kelowna, overlooking the airport. The Robert Mackenzie designed facility is brimming with old world charm and European panache, with slate floors and elegant stonework, while reclaimed fir is used for the impressive doors and tasting bar. No glass and aluminum here! The site has a very relaxed and picturesque setting with panoramic views of the valley. The beautiful tended gardens frame the intimate patio where you are encouraged to relax and unwind. It’s a perfect spot to bring your own picnic and sip their unique wines. If you are looking for an ideal wedding venue, or a place to entertain corporate guests or host private functions, look no further than Ancient Hill. Contact the winery for more details. All grape varietals planted at Ancient Hill were chosen because they would ripen well at this specific location, and ripen well they do. These include Baco Noir, Pinot Noir, Lemberger, and Zweigelt. The wines are crafted only from grapes grown on the property, and the winemaking and bottling takes place here, too. Richard employs consulting Winemaker Christine Leroux to help with decisions in both the vineyards and cellars. He has invested in ultra modern winemaking technology, and this has already paid off handsomely with some award winning wines, notably their Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir. Ancient Hill wines are availabledirect from the winery, VQA stores and select restaurants, and they are well worth trackingdown. This is the winery’s big red. 60% has been aged in American oak and the remainder from a stainless steel vessel and then blended together. The wine shows aromas and flavours of plum and dark berries with enticing notes of coffee and espresso with smooth ripe tannins. An ideal pairing for steak and red meat dishes. ~ Mike Lee
